Day 2: Addis – Debre Birhan ( Total 131Kms) Bike about 65km
We start early. We escort riders out of town following the vans to get through the traffic and awaking hustle and bustle of the city. Ethiopians rise early and get their markets and shops open early. Lots of flavor and color but also traffic. Addis is one of the highest capital cities in the world but is also in a bit of a valley. African vehicles are noted for little pollution control. Between this and climbing out of the city makes for an interesting start to the day. After getting out of the city and climb we are free and very few cars for the rest of the journey. This day is a day with almost always a constant headwind and slightly uphill and is through nice farmland and small villages and farm communities. It is a sneaky tough day as does not look hard. This leads us slowly into the highlands which we hit the next day. After biking about 65/70km until Hamus Gebeya, then we drive by car to Debrebirhan overnight EVA Hotel/similar.
*All is asphalt road
Day 3: Drive Debrebirhan to Tarmaber (60 Km) and bike to Guassa ( 75Km)
Morning drive by car to Tarmaber. On the way visit the beautiful scenery of “Gemassa Gedel”, once Menelik II control the rift valley from here. Then after Tarmaber, we have a junction on the right to Menz- Guassa conservation area. This is the real countryside of Ethiopia and the Menz traditional villages, which contain hubs of two-storey, thatched houses. These are both architecturally interesting and photogenic. Bike all off the road and it has some ups and downs but easy. Have lunch on the way and further biking to Guassa overnight Camping.
* All are off the tracks

Today we start biking from our camp. Cross the town of Debre sina, Robit, the road climbs into karakore, a hillside town where we stopped for coffee (but didn’t see anywhere to stay – Ataya was a better choice), and is then largely flat to kombolcha. kombolcha is a busy town, with lots of shops and restaurants. The rest we drive and overnight Sunnyside hotel.
*All is asphalt road
Day 7: Kombolcha- Woldiya ( Total 139 Km) a long, tough day’s cycling
via Dessie, Haiq, wuchale and Mersa
We traveled this stretch by vehicle, the road is tarmac, but is very hilly, climbing steeply into the mountains, reaching over 3,000m. This would be a long, tough day’s cycling on this trip. As many of the roads is zigzag, hilly and challenging, we might use vehicles depending on the capacity of the bikers. The view is really amazing. Woldiya is the birthplace of Al Amoudi – the part-Ethiopian, part-saudi tycoon who owns a string of commercial interests across Ethiopia, including the Sheraton Addis hotel in Addis. Overnight Lal hotel Woldiya.
*All is asphalt road
Day 8: Bike Woldiya - Gashena ( Total 110 Km) another tough day’s cycling
The east-west road between weldiya and bahir dar is known as the china road because it was built in the 1970s with funds from the chinese government. it is a spectacular, stunning views along the china road. Rising up 45 km to Dilbe (We bike this road attempted by fit cyclists on mountain bikes (especially as you are not carrying luggage). and then running along the top of the ridge to Gashena, a small town found in the Junction to Bahirdar and Lalibela. The last 10+ kms is also unpaved and this is where the airport road meets the unpaved one.
